In 12 years of MaxPreps Cup competition crowning the best overall high school sports program in the country, Bentonville (Ark.) and Carmel (Ind.) are the only public schools to finish on top. Until now. Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Cup winner on the strength of seven state titles and nationally-ranked teams in four sports — boys cross country, girls volleyball, girls cross country and boys ice hockey. The Trojans closed strong in the spring with championships in boys tennis and girls track along with a runner-up finish in girls golf to boost their point total to 2,303 points. That put Wayzata well past past former winners American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) and Bentonville for the top spot. The Minnesota school did not place in the top 100 of the MaxPreps Cup standings the past two years but it did finish No. 59 during the COVID-impacted 2019-20 school year. Bedford (N.H.), which won 12 state championships, finished at No. 4 while Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) came in at No. 5. The MaxPreps Cup is an effort to identify the top high school athletic program in the country. Points are awarded for state championships, state runner-up finishes and national rankings. Additional points are weighted based on popularity of the sport based on participation numbers within that sport, the size of the state, the enrollment of schools in a playoff divisions and the number of teams participating in that playoff division. A sport must be contested in at least 10 states in order for it to be a scoring sport in the standings.
