Bentonville Takes Home Team Title

SPRINGDALE -- Springdale Har-Ber senior Joanna Keck carded the low score of the day with a 79 while Bentonville took home the team title as area golf squads got the season started Tuesday at Springdale Country Club. "I played pretty well overall, but it was a little disappointing because I felt like I left a few shots out there," Keck said. "My chipping was off a little bit, and I didn't get up-and-down to save par a couple of times." "She has been been playing well this summer, and she can get down close par," Har-Ber coach Tim Aynes said. "We'll see lower scores than that from her this year." Bentonville is coming off a runner-up finish in 7A, and though the Tigers lost three seniors from that team, they looked solid to start the season with Katie McCloskey shooting 90 and Maddie Watson an 82. "Katie is a senior, and she has been shooting lower than that; she really just had an off day today," Bentonville coach Lindsey Davidson said. "Our No. 1 player, Kate Robinson, was not here today because she is in Tulsa playing in a big tournament. Maddie (Weston) had a solid day and those three have all been dependable. We are hopeful to have a good season, but you never know. This was a good start." Payton Smith was Rogers High's best performer with a 90 and Chloe Kordsmeier led Rogers Heritage with a 96. A few more 18-hole events will be held before schools starts, and teams will go to mostly nine-hole events on school days before conference and state matches. "Most of us have been playing a lot of summer golf, and it's usually a lot of two-day, 18-holes-a-day events," Keck said. "I'm looking forward to coming back and playing in these school tournaments where you just come out and play nine-hole 'chillers.' It's kinda nice."
