Cash Jones remembers the eye-opening disappointment he felt walking away two years ago from the Blue Chip Fall Brawl.

Though a win and two losses counted as a slight improvement over his two-bout exit the previous year, it hardly seemed like a stage-setter for a high school state championship run months later.

“I don’t usually go to tournaments and go two and out,” Jones said. “It really made me work harder, especially my freshman year. I realized I had to hit the weights because those guys were a lot bigger and a lot stronger than me. I think that’s what I gained most out of the first two years.”
In two high school seasons since, Jones racked up 65 victories and lost seven times. He claimed an Arkansas state title as a freshman 106-pounder and would’ve been a contender for another last season if not for a meniscus tear that shelved him for the postseason.

But the Blue Chip Fall Brawl, which will be livestreamed Saturday on Trackwrestling, is a much bigger beast.
Jones is one of 20 state high school medalists registered just at 138 pounds alone, although he and Missouri state champ Niko Chavez both plan to compete at 145, which certainly isn’t a cakewalk, either.
Not counting Jones and Chavez, the 145-pound pre-registry includes four state champions: Brock Mauller of Missouri, Logan Sloss of Arkansas, Paul Stuart of Kansas and Kansas two-time champ Mason Wallace.
“It’s going to be tough competition, but I’m worried about what I’m going to do,” Jones said. “I’m going to focus on my gameplan and not worry what they’re going to do or what they’ve done in the past because a state championship last year doesn’t make you a better wrestler on the mat this year.”

Chavez is getting his fill of competition and travel this weekend. He’s scheduled to wrestle Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena against Iowa state champ Triston Lara at IAWrestle’s Night of Conflict. “The Night of Conflict is a great opportunity to wrestle at Iowa,” Chavez said. “I always wanted to wrestle at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It’s going to be cool — one mat, one match.”

After his match Friday night, he’ll make the five-hour drive from Iowa City to Kansas City and be ready to compete Saturday morning at Staley High School.

“My goal is to work on takedowns,” Chavez said. “My goal this year is to break the state takedown record. (I want to) go in there Saturday and get close to tech falling everybody I wrestle and get a pin or just end it with a tech fall.”
