The Bentonville Tigers found out last season that the more things change the more they stay the same. The 2015 season was another solid one for the Tigers. Bentonville finished with a record of 10-2, but fell in the playoffs to eventual state champion Fayetteville. The 2016 season will present some new challenges for the Tigers. One thing is certain, the 2016 season will be an interesting one for the Tigers. On the offensive side of the ball, Bentonville will have a quarterback question to answer. Canaan Ross has been the back up behind Kasey Ford the past two years. Ross has a strong arm and a good knowledge of the Bentonville offense and that could give him an edge in the quarterback competition. However, Aaron Estrada is vying for the starting quarterback spot as well. Estrada saw most of the snaps during the spring and he threw the ball with accuracy during spring practice. In addition, the Tigers have talent returning at the running back and wide receiving positions for the 2016 season. Senior running back Jacob Clark is returning after being an All-7A West performer last season. Clark rushed for 11 touchdowns last season and 900 yards. Clark has a very good chance to rush for more yards this season, especially if consistency proves to be a problem at the quarterback position. Wide receiver Kam’Ron Mays Hunt is a player to watch; this season after being on the receiving end of 53 passes and racking up 556 yards receiving last year. The Tigers’ offense has weapons and the first three weeks of the season will be key in helping the offense gain some confidence. One area of concern could be that Bentonville has only two returning starters on the defensive side of the ball. Outside linebacker Destyn Adkins will be a three year starter at the linebacker spot. Adkins accounted for 79 tackles in 2015. Adkins is coming off of shoulder surgery so he may not be 100% by the time fall practices start. The Bentonville Tigers have some talented players at the cornerback positions in the 2016 season. Sam Clark and John Costley each have some experience at the corner position and should do well in the secondary for the Tigers. The defense, while losing some key players to graduation, should still be a force to be dealt with. For the next few seasons, the Bentonville Tigers should remain a playoff contender, but it will be interesting to see what impact Bentonville West High School will have on the football programs at both schools. The Tigers will be tough to beat if the defense can gel and the ground game can be as effective as it was last season. Look for the Tigers to make the playoffs and possibly even make a playoff run.
