Tigers in Top 10 of MaxPrep Cup Standings

The defending champion was down in the fall, but it’s not out yet. Bentonville, who was unranked in the MaxPreps Cup standings when the fall sports were completed, vaulted itself to the No. 6 spot after the winter sports were finished and is within striking distance of winning that title a third consecutive year. The two-time defending MaxPreps Cup champion finished fall sports with state titles in girls tennis and girls cross country and a state runnerup in boys cross country. Bentonville, fueled by its state championships in boys and girls swimming and its runnerup finishes in boys basketball and wrestling, has 530 points in the MaxPreps Cup standings, which were released Saturday morning. Portland (Ore.) Jesuit was in the lead with 570 points — six ahead of second-place Bozeman, Mont. — while Hinesburg (Vt.) Champlain Valley Union and Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy tied for third at 544 and Providence (R.I.) Academy was fifth at 538. Meanwhile, two more Arkansas schools are in the top 15 in the MaxPreps Cup standings through the winter sports. Fayetteville falls from a third-place tie to ninth place with 496 points, while Jonesboro moves from being unranked in the fall to No. 15 with 446 points. Fayetteville, which was listed with 412 points through the fall sports, could have actually been the national leader at that point because its state title in boys golf was not counted in the earlier MaxPreps Cup standings. Fayetteville also has state titles in boys cross country, volleyball and football. Jonesboro now enters the picture with five state titles — girls basketball, boys and girls golf and boys and girls tennis — and is only 23 points from Top 10 status.
