Bentonville’s defense gave the offense plenty of helping hands in the its 21-10 win over Fort Smith Northside, even when the Tigers had the ball Friday night. Inside linebackers David Nichols, Austin Roath and Destyn Adkins all took turns in Bentonville’s backfield and carried the ball to help out the Tigers’ ground attack at Mayo-Thompson Stadium. “Anytime, for us to be successful, we have to run with the football,” Bentonville coach Jody Grant said. “We weren’t able to run the football with very much success. We had our moments, but we have to run the ball consistently. “We have a couple of guys on defense that we’re going to start sprinkling in. Destyn Adkins, Austin Roath and David Nichols are capable running backs, and we hope to start using more and more. They’ll do good for us.” Adkins, who had no carries before Friday’s game, started the second half in the backfield and picked up 13 yards in two carries. Roath, who had carried the ball twice in Bentonville’s first four games, added a 7-yard run on his only rushing attempt. Nichols then sealed the Tigers’ victory when he broke through Northside’s defense and ran 27 yards for a touchdown with 8 minutes, 2 seconds left in the game. He finished with 36 yards on three carries. Play of the game: Northside had a chance to take the lead but faced a fourth-and-1 on the Bentonville 20 early in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies rested their fate on Max Frazier with a quarterback keeper around the left end, but linebacker Brandon Atchison hit Frazier at the line of scrimmage and helped push him back. Player of the game: Nichols, whose 27-yard touchdown run put the game away, had no problem scoring on his first carry. He broke around the right end after he took the handoff from Kasey Ford, and he was in the clear before Northside’s secondary realized where he was. Notable: Backup quarterback Chase Hunter, who threw two touchdown passes in Bentonville’s last two games, caught a 2-yard touchdown pass for his first career reception … Adkins and Roath also had deflected passes in the second half, with the latter’s deflection coming on a fourth-down play. Up Next: Bentonville (5-0, 2-0 7A-West) continues 7A-West Conference play with its homecoming, with Springdale Har-Ber providing the competition.
